Botanical Drawing and Etching

Explore the wonderfully evocative method of drypoint etching with experienced tutor Helen Edwards at one or both of these workshops.

Helen will start you with some sketching exercises before introducing an approach to drawing flowers. You will then explore the beautiful garden and create more sketches ready for etching and printing in the afternoon. You will produce your own drypoint etching and be shown how to ink up to develop tones and colour before printing onto quality paper. As a further enhancement, you will be taught how to develop tone with the inking up process and add colour using chine colle technique.

All materials and tools are provided, just bring your own lunch. Whatever your prior experience, you will be well supported in the friendly small group setting.

Terracotta Pottery with Frances

If you love the idea of making your own pot, vase or ornament in clay, then this is the workshop for you. Bring your ideas, or take one of my suggestions. You could use simple pinching techniques, for instance, to form a clay animal that will make a wonderful gift. Or maybe you would prefer to make a coil pot or bowl. You have the option to use coloured slips during the session to add colour to the red clay body. Your creation will be taken for firing and be available for collection a few weeks’ later.

All materials are provided and no previous crafting experience required. Because we will be using terracotta clay, you are advised to bring an apron to avoid marking your clothes. Booking is essential.

All materials and tools are provided. The workshop is designed for beginners, but others are more than welcome. Since we will be using sharp knives, this is suitable for over 18s only.

Cyanotypes – sunprinting

Explore the historic photographic process of cyanotypes, also known as sun prints in this half day workshop with Abingdon-based artist Emma Williams aka Natural Learning Oxford. Use a specially coated paper, arrange your items on top and expose it to the rays of the sun. You can use plants, objects, stencils, even your hands to make patterns. Then, just rinse your print in water and your picture will appear like magic!

Be warned, it’s mesmerising and totally addictive!
